Causes of Diabetes and How to Live With It

Diabetes can cause a lot of emotional imbalance in a person; it is very common for the patient to feel anxious, angry, or depressed. Such change in behaviour can result due to stress that can come from frequent blood glucose test, monitoring of the diet, insulin shots accompanied by medications daily. For a person to directly switch from a normal daily routine where there are no limitations with food (what to eat and what not to eat), and no amount of test to do regularly, can make a person clingy and irritated.

How is the role of glucose in the body?

Glucose present in our body is produced by two things-food and the liver. Glucose is a vital source of energy for the cells of the tissues and muscles. The liver stores and makes glucose but when the glucose level decreases if you have not eaten anything for too long the liver tends to break down the stored glycogen into glucose to maintain the level of sugar in the body. Diabetes patients are injected with insulin as insulin can lower the blood sugar level in the body. Our body also produces insulin in the pancreas but the amount is not enough, the extra dose is required by diabetic patients to regulate the sugar level in the bloodstream.

Reasons of Diabetes

If you’re noticing any such changes in a diabetic person, remember to not overreact and support them in little ways possible. The causes of diabetes differ with the type of diabetes one is suffering from. Some of the causes of diabetes according to the types are-

Type-1 diabetes

Till date, no specific causes of diabetes have been found out. Experts have suggested that it can be caused by environmental factors, genetics (if a person has a family history of diabetes). Obesity can’t cause type-1 diabetes.

Type-2 diabetes

Unlike type-1 diabetes, type-2 diabetes can be caused due to obesity. Presence of extra weight in the belly makes the cells more resistant to the effects of insulin on the blood sugar

Gestational diabetes

This kind of diabetes occurs due to hormonal imbalance during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the placenta of a woman produces hormones that tend to make the cells less sensitive to the effects of insulin leading to high blood sugar level. Overweight women or women who have gained excess weight during pregnancy are at risk of developing gestational diabetes. Symptoms of Diabetes

The symptoms of diabetes entirely depend on the percent your blood sugar is high. Prediabetes or type-2 diabetic patients may not experience the initial symptoms while type-1 diabetes shows symptoms quite fast and can be severe too. Some of the sign and symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Getting tired often
  • Blur in vision
  • Prone to infections like vaginal infections, gums or skin infection
  • low healing (for injuries and any kind of sores)
  • Irritation that might increase with time
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Urinating frequently
  • Urine that contains ketones
  • Feeling thirsty very often
  • Extreme hunger
  • Dry mouth
  • Itchy skin
  • Yeast infection that may occur between fingers, under the breast or in and around the sex organs (especially in type-2 diabetes)
  • Feeling numb or pain in the legs and feet
